1 Samuel 8: 9-22. The memory of trial tempts us to want to control our future, to secure for ourselves the things we once enjoyed before we were brought to our knees. This is not faith but fear. God may give us what we want to prevent us from choosing something worse. He may allow us to forfeit divine aids so we may taste the fruit of our obstinacy. Or, he may allow us to taste of human dependency until we realize what could have been.
